Why choose chiropractic?

Many women report having a degree of back pain at some point during pregnancy. The sacroiliac joints of the pelvis are the most commonly affected area1,2. Women typically gain around 1.5 to 2.5 stone over the course of their pregnancies. Other factors which affect the structure and alignment of the body, increasing the likelihood of stress and strain, are the shifting centre of gravity due to a growing baby and joint and ligament softening as a result of hormone changes required in preparation for birth.

Complicating the situation, any existing problems resulting from prior trauma to the spine from physical injury or sustained work postures may affect a mother’s health during pregnancy, causing a predisposition to further damage when her body is placed under further stress. Ultimately the pregnant woman’s body is preparing for birth and for feeding the baby after birth. If the pregnant woman is out of alignment it is so much harder for her body to adapt to these changes.

Chiropractic care is safe for both mother and the unborn children3 . So many women now choose to use chiropractic care in conjunction with other important lifestyle choices as a part of their pregnancy and birth preparation as they seek to function well and be able to adapt to the physical changes that pregnancy entails.
